What's Genie?

For a product competition last year, I helped build Genie, a course enrollment tool for UCLA students. Me and two teammates noticed how broken the process was, so we stepped in and fixed it. Our product has now launched and is actively used by students.

Context

It all started from a bad enrollment experience.

Starts Planning

Last winter, I had an odd spring quarter enrollment.

Check Degree Audit

I checked which courses would move me toward graduation.

Juggles Platform

Then I had to juggle Reddit, Bruinwalk, and myUCLA to pick a GE.

Blindly Enrolls

I ran out of time so I blindly enrolled and had a bad experience!

Research

So we dove into research. Does anyone else experience this problem?

We conducted 12 user interviews and a survey with 100+ respondents. We found that yes, many other students experience course enrollment issues (specifically when it comes to GE courses).

Problem

Students want to take interesting classes, but the difficulty of scheduling forces them to pick whatever fits.

Through our research, we found that on average, students experience noticeable stress from course enrollment and consider numerous factors when picking a class.

The organization runs a huge operation to execute their mission of preserving Cantonese heritage. They have accumulated hundreds of local chapters across the world to teach language and host events.
